Stretched out along the steep northern slopes of the Helderberg, for close to a century Alto has built a reputation as one of the most respected red wine producers in South Africa.

Heritage

ALTO ROUGE

The Alto Rouge was first produced in 1919 and became an iconic red wine of South Africa in 1922 when it was sold on the Europe market.

This dark ruby wine consists of an exquisite blend of 5 varietals – Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Shiraz, Merlot and Petite Verdot. The blend varies each year depending on what nature gives us but it will always be majority Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Shiraz.

Alto Rouge is loved by many in South Africa and is always a wine that is bought up when referencing SA red wine. It is the ideal everyday wine but has great ageing potential.

ALTO SHIRAZ

Crafting world-class wines always begins in the vineyard, and the key to Alto’s ongoing success is the dedication to discovering greatness in every vine. Grown in the deep soils of decomposed granite and clay on the lower slopes of the farm; our Shiraz vines are grown under optimum conditions.

Our Shiraz is yet another example of the subtle evolution of the Alto stable, with the perfect balance of the traditional spice and elegant, refined tannins our Shiraz is a true expression of our excellent terroir.

CABERNET SAUVIGNON

With more than half of our Estate planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, the big, bold grape variety is the corner stone of our celebrated red wines. The single cultivar wine was added into our range in 1965 and is our most awarded wine to date.

The impressive Alto Cabernet Sauvignon blends Old World elegance with the full-bodied, fruit-driven character typical of wines from the Golden Triangle – the heart of Stellenbosch’s reputation for producing South Africa’s defining Cabernet Sauvignons.

Tradition

ESTATE BLEND

The Estate wine was created and launched by Bertho van der Westhuizen in 2015. A fairly new addition to Alto’s portfolio, this wine is expressive of our winemaker’s style and our terroir of excellence.

The final blend varies every year but is always made up of majority Cabernet Sauvignon & Cabernet Franc, made in a Bordeaux style.

This wine is the perfect example of the heritage our Estate stands for and how our winemaker is continually turning Traditions into Triumph.

Collectability

ALTO M.P.H.S

Created by Schalk van der Westhuizen in 2010 when he celebrated his first decade at Alto. This wine is the pinnacle of the Alto range, a flagship release made in tribute to the estate’s previous winemakers, whose initials make up the name.

Produced only in exceptional vintages, this exclusive blend of noble cultivars encapsulates the thread of family, tradition and quality that has run through Alto for over a century.

The final blend is never cast in stone; it must simply be the very best wine of the best harvest. Alto M.P.H.S. is the ultimate expression of Alto.
