BERTHO VAN DER WESTHUIZEN

Bertho took over from his father in 2015, making him the 5thwinemaker as well as the second father and son winemaking duo in the history of Alto Wine Estate.  

Born and raised in Stellenbosch, Bertho obtained his degree in 2002 and completed his very first harvest at Alto alongside his father in 2003. Returning to the estate as winemaker in 2015 felt like coming home. He is a true South African and loves a lekker braai and the rugby.

Bertho follows a similar winemaking philosophy to his father, placing great emphasis on terroir and the quality of fruit. By allowing the vineyards to speak and applying minimal intervention in the cellar, he crafts wines that are rich, powerful with exceptional fruit purity.

Bertho’s expertise and deep respect for the vineyards ensure that every wine produced at Alto reflects the estate’s longstanding reputation for quality, character and consistency.
