Rouge 2020:

This vintage is a blend of 33% Cabernet Franc, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Shiraz, 8% Petit Verdot and 7% Merlot. The nose shows aromas of cedar, pine needles and freshly crushed raspberries. The palate is refined with supple tannins and a long finish of blackcurrant, complemented by hints of dried fennel.

Rouge 2021:

A blend of 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Shiraz, 20% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot. Currently drinking beautifully, this wine offers aromas of fynbos, sour cherry and a touch of graphite. The palate is silky and luxurious with dark fruits such as prune and blueberry with hints of pine needle.

Rouge 2022:

The 2022 vintage is a blend of 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Shiraz, 12% Cabernet Franc & 2% Petit Verdot. This iconic vintage boasts a rich bouquet of plum, fynbos and hints of charcuterie on the nose. The palate is complex with crushed blackberry, dry fig and nuances of graphite. The tannins are plush and structured which ensure that this wine will age beautifully over the next 5 to 8y ears.

Alto, situated on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountain in the Stellenbosch district, dates back to 1693 when it was part of a much larger farm called Groenrivier (Green River), granted to a free burgher by Governor Simon van der Stel. In 1919 the owner of the farm, Hennie Malan, sold off half the land to his brother-in-law and set about planting vines on his remaining portion, focusing exclusively on red varieties. He named the farm Alto, a reference to its altitude (some slopes rise as high as 500m above sea level) and his striving for excellence.

Alto has 93 hectares under vines. The trellised vineyards cling to the high granite slopes, ideal for the cultivation of red wine varieties.
