Artist : Alto Wines

Winter is one of the most important seasons in the vineyards at Alto. While the vines lie dormant, our vineyard team is hard at work preparing for the next growing season through careful pruning, soil regeneration and vine planting. Every task undertaken during these cooler months plays a vital role in producing the premium wines for which Alto is renowned.

Why Vineyard Pruning Matters

Pruning is one of the most significant vineyard practices and takes place over a two-month period on our estate. Each vine is pruned by hand to create the ideal balance between growth and fruit production.

This precise process influences vine health, grape quality and ultimately the character and consistency of every wine we produce. By establishing the right balance early in the season, we lay the foundation for an exceptional harvest.

Building Healthy Soils for Healthy Vines

Great wines begin with healthy vineyards, and healthy vineyards begin with healthy soils.

Throughout winter, our cover crops play an essential role in naturally replenishing the soil. They help improve soil structure and return valuable nutrients. As these cover crops break down, they enrich the soil with organic matter, creating an environment where vines can thrive.

Planting of Cabernet Sauvignon

This year, we have started planting earlier to stay ahead of the winter rains. We are planting a selection of clones of Cabernet Sauvignon, Alto's most celebrated variety and the cornerstone of our winemaking heritage.

Although these young vines will take a few years before contributing to a vintage, every planting is an investment in the future of Alto.

A Commitment to Quality from Vineyard to Bottle

At Alto, exceptional wine begins long before harvest. Every decision made in the vineyard, from pruning and soil management to selecting the best Cabernet Sauvignon clones, is driven by our commitment to quality.

By combining generations of viticultural knowledge with thoughtful vineyard practices, we continue to craft wines that reflect the unique character of our vineyards and uphold Alto's legacy of producing some of South Africa's finest wines.
